You've seen evidence of pollution along the Mondego Valley? Some other environmental matter to report? Use this information to find the right place to contact.
Or do you have information about who to contact for a particular problem? A phone number? An email address? Let us know by email and we'll include details here.
SOS WATER (rivers, streams)
- if you’ve seen water pollution
- if you’ve seen someone polluting water (best if you have number plate of a vehicle)
SOS GARBAGE (forest, verges, riverbanks)
- if you’ve seen garbage
- if you’ve seen someone dropping garbage ((best if you have number plate of a vehicle)
You can call your local police (GNR). But better is to write an email (in Portuguese) with details of what you’ve seen to:

This is the central office of Serviço de Proteçcao da Natureza e do Ambiente (SEPNA) in Lisbon – they will inform their regional offices such as in S. Comba Dão (Carregal do Sal district) or in Lousã (Tábua, Oliveira do Hospital, Arganil). Normally one of their assistants will come to your home if you send your contact information. You investigate the "damage" or pollution with them and explain what you have seen (in portuguese). These SEPNA assistants are very interested in all cases of pollution and try to help (as they’ve already done here in the Mondego Vale). But they cannot change the world in a couple of days; they just work to uncover proof of pollution. They then pass the information on to (in Coimbra) the Commisão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Centro (CCDRC).
All in all, this process will take years, but SEPNA has only existed a few years as well. The more cases of pollution – or ecological crime – that arrive on their desk, the better is our chance of achieving more environmental awareness.
SOS FOREST
- For problems with hunters, (like traps for wild boar, which often catch dogs), you might call your local GNR. They will send out the GNR Florestal. They normally find the hunters and manage to stop that dangerous and cruel method of hunting.
- For problems with eucalyptus planting you can go to your local Câmara Municipal, who give licenses for planting eucalyptus. If you can show the plantation on a military map, they might send an officer to do something if (most likely) it is illegal.
SOS CAMINHOS PÚBLICOS
If a public road becomes impassable or almost impassable (because of rain or problems caused by loggers), you can ask the Presidente of the local Junta de Fréguesia to do something. Normally they come immediately to prevent more damage to the public road.
